The ASTO Small Ships' Race is a youth event open to monohull sailing vessels up to 120ft in length. The inaugural race from Weymouth to St. Malo in 2002 was deemed to be a tremendous success by all involved. Since then host ports include Ipswich, Delfzijl, Glasgow, Belfast and Cowes.
Each year ASTO hold a summer passage making race, with two host ports, and an October Solent based race with Cowes as the host port. Follow the links on the right to see the reports of previous races.
The races are open to ASTO members and non-members alike. Minimum waterline length for entries is 7.3m (24ft). The races are sailed under the Racing and Sailing Rules issued by Sail Training International with any amendments or variations issued in the Notice to Race. At least half of all of those on board during the race must be 25 years old or under. The entry fee for each race is £50 per vessel.
After the record number of entries for the 2007 race we hope that 2008 will be an even bigger success. The Lord Lieutenant of the Island, Major General Martin White, recently added his support to the event by agreeing to be the patron of the race.
This year the race is to be held over 3rd to 5th October 2008. Follow these links for the Notice of Race, Entry Form and a copy of the current rules.
